What about healthcare?
The Citizens Advice Healthcare guide will help you to understand the healthcare system in the UK. If you have any difficulty, please ask your department to assist you in finding the care that you need. If for some reason they cannot help, you can contact us for advice.
Doctors and dentists
Once you have secured your accommodation and have a fixed address you will be able to register with a medical doctor (General Practitioner) and dentist. Enter your postcode on the NHS website to find comprehensive lists of local doctors’ and dentists’ surgeries.
You may also call NHS-Direct (call 111) at any hour for confidential health advice from a nurse.
For free emergency treatment visit Addenbrooke’s Hospital Accident and Emergency department at Hills Road, Cambridge, CB2 0QQ. If you are normally a UK resident NHS hospital treatment is free; if you do not normally live here then you may be required to pay for such treatment even if you are a British citizen. Detailed information about eligibility.
Opticians
There are a variety of independent and high street opticians providing eye-tests and spectacles, some at discounted rates, within the town centre. For serious issues regarding eye health you must contact your doctor (see above) who will refer you to an ophthalmologist or an optometrist.
